Jesus wept and why that's good news for us
Did Jesus actually cry?
Do you know what the shortest verse in the Bible is? It’s only two words! No joke! John 11:35 is only two words: “Jesus wept.”
Jesus wept before He raised Lazarus from the dead. But then Jesus stood at the entrance of the tomb and said, “Lazarus, come out!” And Lazarus came out, burial cloth and all, four days after he died and was laid in the tomb.
Do you know what that shows about Jesus? He’s all powerful. He can really do anything. But there’s something else, too. Jesus felt sad. He cried. He wept.
We don’t really know all the reasons He wept. Some people say it was because death is unnatural. Some people say He was so sad because He really loved Lazarus. You know what, though? It shows us that when we hurt, Jesus hurts. He really is a mighty savior. When we’re sad, He’s sad, too. That shows us how much the Lord Jesus Christ loves us.
Are you ever sad? We get sad when someone we know is sick, when someone we love dies, or when we lose a pet. We get sad if we get disciplined. When we’re sad, Jesus is sad, too. He loves us when we’re sick, He loves us when we’re sad, and He loves us when we’re happy. He loves us always. Jesus wept, and that’s really good news.
Prayer
Lord, we thank You that You love us at all times. Help us to remember that. Thank You for this lesson that tells us how much You loved Lazarus and how much You love us. We worship the Father because of You. Amen.
About the Redeemer Community Church PCA children's devotions:
Sometimes it can be hard to break down Biblical truths for our kids into easy-to-understand and easy-to-remember bite-sized pieces. Pastor Chuck does this weekly in his Children's Sermon, and we're sharing key points from those sermons here each week. Feel free to use with your littles as conversation starters throughout the week, reminders of what we learned in church on Sundays, and just general opportunities to share our love of God's word and His love for us.
Redeemer Community Church PCA is a Presbyterian church in Ocala, FL.
