What should we do when God makes us wait?
You probably don’t like waiting, do you?
Waiting in the drive through, waiting for your birthday to arrive, waiting for Christmas, waiting for your grandparents to visit.
Did you know the disciples had to wait after Jesus was raised from the dead? That probably was a surprise for them.
When Jesus rode into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday, people said “Hosanna! Save us! Hosanna! Glory to God in the highest! Hosanna!”
They were hoping Jesus would really be the Messiah. But then when He died on the cross, they thought He couldn’t possibly be it. Then He rose from the dead, and boy, they were really excited again! They thought He was surely the Messiah after all and would save them from Rome and solve all their problems.
You know what Jesus told them? Jesus told them to stay in Jerusalem and He told them to wait.
What were they supposed to wait for? Do you know?
It was for something that He had promised them He would send them. He was telling them to wait for the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit was going to come and remind them of everything He did and said. The Holy Spirit was going to teach them, the Holy Spirit was going to give them the right words to say when they told people about Him dying on the cross and rising from the dead.
Why did God tell them to wait? Why does God make us wait? He wants us to learn how to pray.
When we wait, that’s when we cry out.
When you’re in the car driving somewhere, you probably ask your parents, “How many more minutes?” because you don’t want to wait. But you express that by talking to your mom and dad. God wants us to talk to Him as well. Next time we have to wait, we should talk to God as we wait and ask Him to send us the Holy Spirit to teach us more about Jesus.
Prayer
Dear Jesus, thank you that even in the times we have to wait, you’re teaching us. That we are dependent on You, to wait upon You and look for what You’re going to do. We pray that as we wait, that You’ll give us the Holy Spirit, teach us more about Jesus and show us how to talk to others about You.
About the Redeemer Community Church PCA children's devotions:
Sometimes it can be hard to break down Biblical truths for our kids into easy-to-understand and easy-to-remember bite-sized pieces. Pastor Chuck does this weekly in his Children's Sermon, and we're sharing key points from those sermons here each week. Feel free to use with your littles as conversation starters throughout the week, reminders of what we learned in church on Sundays, and just general opportunities to share our love of God's word and His love for us.
